Free Calls to telephone numbers in 30 countries

Inflation has also hit me hard and now I am cutting down my monthly expenses. For international calls I tried VSNL VoIP service which is dirt cheap, then I tried Gizmo backdoor calling. Today I came across a new site FreeRinger.

FreeRinger is a calling service which allows you to make FREE calls to telephone numbers (in more than 30 countries throughout the world) right from your web browser. The best part is that you don't have to download and install any software. Enter the phone number in your browser and hit enter. Viola!! you are connected.

Some of the important features of this service are:

  • No Downloads
  • Easy to use
  • Never pay for your calls
  • Receiving calls from regular or internet (SIP) phones
  • Speed dial hyper links
  • Embed FreeRinger into your website with one line of code

Current Serious Weakness in Windows

Microsoft posts emergency defense for new attack. A remote-code exploit that could spread rapidly like the 2003 MSBlaster worm is putting all versions of Windows at risk.

Rare out-of-cycle patch emphasizes the risk

With little warning, Microsoft released yesterday an unscheduled or "out-of-cycle" patch for a highly critical vulnerability that affects all versions of Windows. Security bulletin MS08-067 (patch 958644) was posted to warn of a remote-code attack that could spread wildly across the Internet.
Microsoft says it found evidence two weeks ago of an RPC (remote procedure call) attack that can potentially infect Windows machines across the Net with no user action required.
Windows Server 2003, 2000, and XP (even with Service Pack 2 or 3 installed) are particularly vulnerable. Vista and Server 2008 gain some protection via User Account Control, data-execution protection, and other safeguards, as explained in an article by Dan Goodin in the Register.

PureText 2.0

Have you ever copied some text from a web page or a document and then wanted to paste it as simple text into another application without getting all the formatting from the original source? PureText (Windows only FREEWARE utility) makes this simple by adding a new Windows hot-key (default is WINDOWS+V) that allows you to paste text to any application without formatting.

After running PureText.exe, you will see a "PT" tray icon appear near the clock on your task bar.  You can click on this icon to remove formatting from the text that is currently on the clipboard.  You can right-click on the icon to display a menu with more options.

The easiest way to use PureText is to simply use its hot-key to paste text instead of using the standard CTRL+V hot-key that is built into most Windows applications.  To configure PureText, right-click on its tray icon and choose "Options" from the pop-up menu.  The default hot-key is WINDOWS+V, but this can be changed.  In this Options window, you can also configure PureText to run each time you log into Windows.

What PureText Will and Will Not Do

PureText only removes rich formatting from text.  This includes the font face, font style (bold, italics, etc.), font color, paragraph styles (left/right/center aligned), margins, character spacing, bullets, subscript, superscript, tables, charts, pictures, embedded objects, etc.  However, it does not modify the actual text.  It will not remove or fix new-lines, carriage returns, tabs, or other white-space.  It will not fix word-wrap or clean up your paragraphs.  If you copy the source code of a web page to the clipboard, it is not going to remove all the HTML tags.  If you copy text from an actual web page (not the source of the page), it will remove the formatting.
PureText is basically equivalent to opening Notepad, doing a PASTE, followed by a SELECT-ALL, and then a COPY.  The benefit of PureText is performing all these actions with a single Hot-Key and having the result pasted into the current window automatically.

Golfzilla - Play Golf in Google Maps

Golfzilla is golf game that is currently in development using Android. The game uses Google Maps satellite imagery of various golf courses in different countries. Golfzilla is expected to be available at the end of 2008 and should support a peer to peer competition mode using GTalk.

Check out the YouTube video below to see the game in action.

Golfzilla isn't that cool, but it lets you play golf on Google Maps with the option to select the country and the course. So instead of fancy 3D graphics, you are actually playing as if you were on the ground, but from a bird's eye view. The final release of Golfzilla is expected to be available at the end of 2008 and will support P2P battle mode using GTalk. That's pretty much in line with the expected launch of Android.

Share your computer using Google Talk

It’s really cool thing when we’re able to share all our system resources with our trusted friends. For example if we want to share some file or you want a folder to be synchronized across all the friend’s systems so that all the friends can work together and they have the current copy of all the files in a folder. Or the biggest part is that if you want to see a presentation on your friend’sdesktop or you want to show your friend something interesting, you are able to share your desktop securely with your friends. All these tasks can be achieved through manysoftwares but one software I have found out is cool in the sense that it lets you do all this through google talk’s service itself.
GBridge is a free software which makes use of google’s technology to share folders, transfer files, synchronize items between different PCs, chat and share your desktop with your google talk friends at the same time.

  • DesktopShare(VNC): Access your computer desktop remotely or share your desktop with your friend from anywhere, even behind NAT!
  • SecureShare: Securely share files among your own computers, so you can remotely access your files, e.g. play mp3 , with ultimate privacy. Securely share files to your designated friend, so the selected friend can instantly view the auto-generated photo thumbnails and slideshow remotely. No web upload/download needed!
  • AutoSync: Transfer big files and sync folders from/to anywhere has never been easier. Auto schedule, auto resume, incremental and no size limit!
  • EasyBackup: Setup an auto-recurring local or remote backup of your important directory is as easy as 1-2-3!

Open two Instances of Microsoft Outlook in Single Windows PC Simultaneously with ExtraOutlook

In previous post we discussed that how to access multiple Microsoft Outlook profiles using shortcuts. The problem I faced that I was able to access only one profile at a time. I wanted to access multiple instances of outlook to improve productivity. I was searching the net and found one solution as ExtraOutlook. It supports an ‘extra’ Microsoft Outlook instance that can be connected to different Exchange server simultaneously in the same PC system, enabling a more efficient multi-tasking environment for end users.

Users can download the zip file of ExtraOutlook, unzip it and save it under C:\ExtraOutlook. In order to run it correctly, just open a command prompt and key in below command:

extraoutlook.exe “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\Outlook.exe” /profile “Techcorrespondent”

Second instance of Outlook will be launched

open two instances of outlook

ExtraOutlook works well for Microsoft Outlook 2003 and 2007 in both Windows XP and Vista OS system.

Shortcut for Multiple Profile in Outlook

Microsoft Office Outlook

Do you use multiple profiles in Outlook? If you go into Control Panel, Mail and select your most used profile in the Always use this profile dropdown, then change it to Always ask... the profile listed when you first start Outlook will be the one you selected and you'll have the option of choosing a different profile.

If you prefer to use shortcuts to open Outlook, you can configure it to open Outlook using a specific profile. Use the command line switch /profile profile_name and replace profile_name with your profile's name. This also works with the Start menu, Run command. Type outlook.exe /profile profile_name in the run box to open Outlook using a specific profile.

Good format to Backup your Audio CD

flac.jpgThe one question when backing up your CD collection into audio files is what format should I use? You wouldn't want to pick one that will need to be updated in 5 years, because who really likes feeding 2,000 CDs into a computer one by one? FLAC is the answer to this, and is extremely easy to use as well.

FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec, an audio format similar to MP3, but lossless, meaning that audio is compressed in FLAC without any loss in quality. This is similar to how Zip works, except with FLAC you will get much better compression because it is designed specifically for audio, and you can play back compressed FLAC files in your favorite player (or your car or home stereo, see supported devices) just like you would an MP3 file.

FLAC stands out as the fastest and most widely supported lossless audio codec, and the only one that at once is non-proprietary, is unencumbered by patents, has an open-source reference implementation, has a well documented format and API, and has several other independent implementations.

Hackers can remote control your webcam and mic

The attack, dubbed ClickJacking, uses Javascript and other scripting language to fool a user into clicking on invisible links that are obscured by graphic elements or other windows.  The user thinks he’s clicking on an innocuous box or game element, but in fact that click is being transmitted to another frame.  Such attacks have been around for ages on the Internet, but this appears to be the first time Adobe Flash has been targeted.

Adobe has issued a “critical” security alert to users of its Flash player.  The company warns people that hackers can mislead people into clicking on link that can then remotely control the user’s webcam and microphone.  Adobe’s security warning comes on the heels of recently released proof of concept code which shows the attack in action.

Guy Aharonovsky has released proof of concept code that demonstrates the attack and you can view that page by clicking here.  In the demo, the user is presented with a simple game that forces the user to click around the screen.

All Adobe Flash Player versions Adobe Flash Player 9.0.124.0 and earlier are vulnerable and the company advises people to go in the Flash Player setting menu and select “Always deny” in the Global Privacy Settings panel.  This will always deny the microphone and webcam and should be considered a temporary workaround while Adobe researches a more permanent solution.

Spelling Checker For Any Software Application

I’ve just started using TinySpell as a spelling checker and am quite satisfied with the results I’m seeing so far. No matter which application you are working in, as long as there are text and you think spelling is important, just turn on TinySpell and it will start checking that your spellings are all correct in real time while you type. I personally work in opera, notepad++, pspad, dreamweaver etc where text content and spellings can be quite important.

I always do my browsing and blogging with my favorite browser Opera, which doesn’t have a built-in spelling checker and getting ASpell setup for it was a failure after several attempts. This kinda left some of my blog posts with typos which I’m unaware of. Not anymore since I’ve installed TinySpell. Now I can blog with confidence! Best of all, TinySpell is free!

Migrating MS Outlook AutoComplete Data

Do you miss the convenience of Outlook automatically completing people's names as you begin to type them on your new computer? Are you upgrading to a new computer and don't want to lose all the names stored in your Outlook AutoComplete feature? Wouldn't it be nice if Outlook installed on your new computer just "remembered" the names and filled them in for you?

Copy the names in AutoComplete to another computer

Important  You must exit Outlook before starting the following procedure. The names will be included in AutoComplete when you restart Outlook.

1. On the computer with the saved AutoComplete names, go to

drive:\Documents and Settings\user name\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.

Note  Depending on your file settings, this folder might be hidden. To view the files in this folder, do one of the following:

Microsoft Windows XP

1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
3. Click the View tab, and then, under Advanced settings, under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.

Now, in Windows Vista, that folder doesn't exist. So, I had problems finding it...

..Turns out that the new location in Vista where your NK2 file is located has moved to fit it into the new structure. That new location where you need to copy the NK2 file is:

C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook

Tip  You can copy the file to removable media, such as a floppy disk or a CD, and then copy the file to the correct location on the other computer. Or you can attach the file to an e-mail message and send the message to yourself. On the new computer, open the attachment in Outlook, and then save it to the correct location.

2. Right-click profile name.nk2, and then click Copy.

Tip  You can copy the file to removable media, such as a floppy disk or a CD, and then copy the file to the correct location on the other computer. Or you can attach the file to an e-mail message and send the message to yourself. On the new computer, open the attachment in Outlook, and then save it to the correct location.

3. On the computer where you want to populate the AutoComplete feature, copy the file to

drive:\Documents and Settings\user name\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.

4. If the Outlook user profile name is different on the computer where you are moving the .nk2 file, you must rename the file with the same Outlook user profile name after you copy it to the correct folder. For example, if you move Kim Akers.nk2 from the original computer with an Outlook user profile name of Kim Akers, and you copy the Kim Akers.nk2 file to the new computer, you must rename it with the Outlook profile name being used on the new computer.

5. When prompted about replacing the existing file, click Yes.

6. Open Outlook to view changes.
