Recover Lost MS Outlook PST Password

I am very finicky about password security and poor with remembering passwords. I keep small scratch pad where I keep all my password in my coded language. I had archived some important mails in one of my PST and when I tried to open the PST, it prompted me to enter password. I tried my default password#1, failed. Tried second password, failed again. I tried all passwords I had used in my recent past.

I searched through forums and one gentleman suggested me to use PstPassword  to recover the lost password. It is very tiny utility of 38.3 KB only. It can recover lost password from Outlook .PST (Personal Folder) files. This utility can recover the PST passwords of Outlook 97, Outlook 2000, Outlook XP, Outlook 2003, and Outlook 2007. You don't have to install MS-Outlook in order to use this utility. You only need the original PST file that you locked with a password.

PstPassword

PstPassword  doesn't require any installation process or additional dll files. In order to start using it.

1. Just run the executable file, PstPassword.exe.

2. After you run PstPassword, the main window displays the list of all PST files of the current logged on user (Under Documents and Settings\User Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook).

3. For each password-protected PST file, PstPassword provide 3 alternative passwords that will open the PST file.

4. If the PST is not protected by a password,the 3 password columns remain empty.

Keep this file handy as you never know when you will need this.

Turn your simple Java phone with data connection in a Smartphone - Part 1

I am a gadget freak and yearning for a Blackberry or any Smartphone with Windows Mobile OS. I used to curse myself for my Java phone as I was not able to view or read my doc, xls, pdf files on my mobile. I wanted to read the pdf documents, access my mails and viewing MS Office documents on the move. But I do not want to spend fortune for Smartphone either in this recession hit time, when I do not know whether I will have my job tomorrow.

I was thinking when I was preparing for my Java examination last week that can't we harness the power of Java for my mobile phone. I started browsing net and stumbled upon Soonr. This service let me view files shared in my home computer, let me access Skype installed in my system, MS Outlook (you can access MAC mail as well). And not only this you can view more than 75 file formats in your mobile phone, whether it is Photoshop file, PowerPoint presentation, MS Excel file, Visio file etc.

What's more the file you have synched at your computer is available to you even if your desktop is offline. Because Soonr is using the cloud computing, and now you can enjoy the power of cloud from your ol' java phone.The copy of synched file is available in the Soonr cloud, which you can access from anywhere. For enhanced and fast browsing in your mobile phone my suggestion is "please install Opera Mini in your mobile phone. It's damn fast mobile browser and as good as desktop browser".

Some of the interesting features of Soonr are

  • Soonr Desktop: Access your Desktop from your mobile phone and do search, view, forward and share file from your desktop.
  • Organizer: Access your Outlook and Mac Mail from you mobile.
  • Soonr Talk: Access your Skype client of your desktop from your mobile phone.
  • Soonr Secure: Secure your files with "set it and forget it" continuous backup.
  • Soonr Print : Print anywhere on any shared printer, even using your iPhone!

Check the video and and I swear that you will say that you can't believe it.

Now I must say you won't feel that your are tied to your personal computer for data. Data is available to you from your Java phone even when you are on the move.

Apply color automatically to calendar items in Outlook 2003

I trash my Outlook Calendars with lots of entries and frequently I miss out on some important event because I get no visual clue about the appointments in the heap of calendar events. I missed my brother's anniversary :( this time.

Now I color code appointment with my boss with red, all birthdays with blue and so on. I started doing it manually but then I realized why not do it automatically using rules based on few keywords.

To achieve this go to Edit menu and from there select "Automatic Formatting". Click 'Add'. In 'Name' text box, type a name for formatting rule. From 'Label' drop down, select color for this Category. Click 'Condition'. In 'Search for the word field, type the word used as criteria. Click 'OK'.

You may automatically assign a label to a calendar event and in order to assign label to all existing events, please follow the steps given below.

  • In Calendar go to Edit>Automatic Formatting. The automatic formatting dialog box will appear as given below.

  • Click on 'Add'. Then in the "Name" text box enter the desired name for the formatting rule.
  • From the "Label" drop down list select the color for this Label. Please note you can change the color of existing label format.
  • Click on the "Condition" button and "Filter" dialog box will appear.
  • In the "Search for the word" field enter the word you want to use as your criteria.
  • Now click "OK" and all appointments will be color coded as per the criteria you have set.

Hope you will find it useful and will not miss birthday or important appointment.

Save Outlook mails attachments without any software.

If you are outlook addict and receive lots of attachments which you need to save in a folder in your hard drive. I am sure you find it quite a pain to do this. There are lots of freeware tools available to achieve this task. However, using a VBA code it can be achieved. And you may create a custom button in your Outlook toolbar to access this function at the click of button. I must say it is a bit geeky but it is fun.

This code copies attachments from the selected messages and does not delete the attachments from the messages. Copy the code given below

Public Sub SaveAttachments()

Dim objOL As Outlook.Application

Dim objMsg As Outlook.MailItem 'Object

Dim objAttachments As Outlook.Attachments

Dim objSelection As Outlook.Selection

Dim i As Long

Dim lngCount As Long

Dim strFile As String

Dim strFolderpath As String

Dim strDeletedFiles As String

    ' Get the path to your My Documents folder

    strFolderpath = CreateObject("WScript.Shell").SpecialFolders(16)

    On Error Resume Next

    ' Instantiate an Outlook Application object.

    Set objOL = CreateObject("Outlook.Application")

    ' Get the collection of selected objects.

    Set objSelection = objOL.ActiveExplorer.Selection

' The attachment folder needs to exist

' You can change this to another folder name of your choice

    ' Set the Attachment folder.

    strFolderpath = strFolderpath & "\OLAttachments\"

    ' Check each selected item for attachments.

    For Each objMsg In objSelection

    Set objAttachments = objMsg.Attachments

    lngCount = objAttachments.Count

    If lngCount > 0 Then

    ' Use a count down loop for removing items

    ' from a collection. Otherwise, the loop counter gets

    ' confused and only every other item is removed.

    For i = lngCount To 1 Step -1

    ' Get the file name.

    strFile = objAttachments.Item(i).FileName

    ' Combine with the path to the Temp folder.

    strFile = strFolderpath & strFile

    ' Save the attachment as a file.

    objAttachments.Item(i).SaveAsFile strFile

    Next i

    End If

    Next

ExitSub:

Set objAttachments = Nothing

Set objMsg = Nothing

Set objSelection = Nothing

Set objOL = Nothing

End Sub

Now open MS Outlook and press Alt + F11 (alternatively click on Tools > Macro > Visual Basic Editor). Double click on ThisOutlookSession. Now in the right hand pane, paste the code you had copied earlier. Save and then exit.

Now to add the button to you toolbar. Right click on the toolbar > Customize. Then go to Commands tab and select Macros. In the right hand side, drag the to the toolbar.

Now go to Tools>Macros>Security and set the security setting to medium.

To  test this program, select mail(s) with attachments and click on the button you have created in the toolbar. And woosh.... the attachment is copied to the folder you have created.

Feedky – Web Dashboard to monitor online videos networks

Pranav and I have one thing in common. We love to cook and love technologies. And this time for new year we were planning to have great feast and for that we were tracking new year specific recipes. For food recipes we have subscribed to numerous video sharing sites like, YouTube, Metacafe, Google Video etc. However, tracking all sites was not a problem as we were using the site Feedky.

Feedky allows you to collect video from 41 video sharing sites. All you need to do is to specify the tags only and Feedky we take care of everything. Get notified whenever anyone uploads video matching your criteria through email. You may track the new videos through website, feed reader like feedburner or Google Reader etc or your own blog.

The only problem we face is that the site is available in Spanish. Though there is option of English as well, however the English version of the site is not working and I have to access the site using Google Translate. Though it is bit cumbersome but it is worth it.

Put MS Outlook sticky notes on desktop

MS Outlook is great tool to organize the workload.Few days back I was putting the yellow paper sticky note to my monitor to remind me one important task. I confess I am big forgetful and depend too much on sticky notes.MS Outlook has post it notes features however, most of the time we check the mails and the post it notes view is not visible. And what I need this kind of notes to be available on my face.

In order to put Outlook notes on your desktop, simply drag the note to your desktop and lo the note is available on your desktop. This puts a copy of the Note on the desktop and leaves the original in Outlook. The Note on the desktop can then be opened by double clicking on; it can also be updated/edited, which does not change the original Note in Outlook. In fact, the original can deleted from Outlook but the Note on the desktop will remain there.

And if you are looking for a bit more than this then there are numerous software available, some of them are free and some are not. You may check this at:

http://download.com.com/3120-20-0.html?qt=stickies&tg=dl-2001&search=+Go%21+

ATnotes is another piece of freeware software has some unique feature such alarms, colors. blinking,etc.

Try using the technique for quick notes or for reminders.
