Wobzip – Your online file decompressor

Wobzip 1I do not have to bother about anything when I decompress any compressed file format as I have installed Win RAR and 7 Zip in my computer. Together they are able to handle most of the compressed file format. But what when you are elsewhere, and you do not have access to these utilities; then you can do it by uploading it to Wobzip.

Wobzip supports 16 file formats (7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2, TAR, RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, LZH, CHM, Z, CPIO, RPM, DEB and NSIS). What is interesting is that you can extract online files directly as well. Enter the URL and SNAP…. You can see the extracted files. You need not download the file and then upload it again to decompress it. You can also decompress the password protected files as well, provided you know the password.

Some of the uses I do are:

  1. Before downloading files zipped file from any unknown I check the content of the file as well as do quick virus scan online.
  2. Download the audio driver, only the INF file which I required. It helped me to avoid downloading the entire driver file of massive size.

You may also use another online service Krunchit. However, it has fewer format support compared to Wobzip. However, I also keep one USB pen drive handy with portable 7zip in it to be on the safer side, because internet connection is still not ubiquitous in India.

Office 2003 Menu in Office 2007 using UBitMenu

Office 2007 is impressive, I agree. The features, look and additions of new apps like One Note, Groove entice you to upgrade. I did that as well and the most vexing problem I faced was the "ribbon". The Office classic menu and toolbar was deeply engraved in my mind from the Office 97 days. I was so used to that I found very difficult to work in Office 2007. I uninstalled the software and reverted to Office 2003. And to work with Office 2007 files I installed Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack .

I am not a single exception. The comments I get from others is "why the damn menu has been changed. I knew the old classic menu bar and toolbar as back of my hand". And believe me majority of them downgraded to Office 2003 only due to this reason. To make our life easier UBitMenu (a freeware plug-in) brings the Office 2003 menu in Office 2007. It adds a new tab "Menu" in the ribbon. And the classic Office 2003 menu is available in this tab.

UbitMenu

Not all functionality is available in the toolbar. Some of the features which has been discontinued in Office 2007 is not available. For example, the Pivot Table Layout option is not available smile_sad.

So, UbitMenu provides you best of both of the world. You have ribbon as well as the classic menu of Office 2003 is available. However, this is free for non commercial use only.

Undo send mail from Gmail

Google loves to lead the way ahead from its competitors, more precisely in the email segment. This time it has launched a new feature of Undoing or recalling of sent mails which was  never possible with any webmail service provider except ZOHO Mail. However Google is not the first webmail service provider that has introduced Undo Send feature but definitely the biggest webmail provider on earth.

GMail Undo

As soon as you recall the message within 5 seconds. Gmail open the mail in the compose mail format.

GMail Undo Sent

Previously we were able to undo sent mails using MS Outlook but now Google has delivered the same feature to its webmail service. The only limitation to its "Undo feature" is that you have to undo the sent mail within 5 seconds. Google labs will have to work a bit to allow us to configure the delay as we use in Microsoft Outlook and the delay sending mail feature of ZOHO Mail.

Undo email is a Gmail Lab's feature. You can turn the feature on by enabling Undo Send in Gmail Labs under Settings Google Labs.

Outlook Missing Attachment Reminder

It happens sometime that I write a mail and mention about the attached file, and forget to attach the file in the mail. Once I realize this after few minutes then I send the mail again with the attachment (writing sorry) or I receive a curt reminder about the missing attachment. What I was doing that I had created a rule in outlook to defer sending mail by 15 minutes. I have discussed this in the Career Saving Outlook tips post.

Outlook Attachment Reminder project of CodePlex (Open Source Community) will ensure that you do not go through this self humiliation. The piece of software is free and you may even download the source code and modify it as per your requirement as well.

The logic of the program is fairly simple, it searches for words like attachment, attached etc. and if they exist, it checks if there are any files attached. If not, then it will prompt with a message box. Then you can add the attachment.

Download it here.

Free Duplicate Email Remover for Outlook

One of the most daunting task for me was to remove duplicate emails in my Outlook. I had stacked up email marked as important in multiple PSTs. Instead of deleting the duplicates right away I deferred it with a plan that I will delete the duplicates whenever I will get some free time, and that never happens. And the situation is quite worse on Monday when I have lots of emails with its share of duplicates as well. And due to Outlook rules and my email id in multiple distribution lists, I end up receiving lots of duplicate emails and these mails moves to different PSTs.

I was looking for software to remove duplicate emails in Outlook and found some crap sharewares with prohibitive price and poor functionality. I found one and I was compelled to share this with everyone. With Outlook Duplicate Items Remover 1.4.2 (ODIR) it is matter of few seconds to remove all duplicates. ODIR removes duplicates from Contacts; Calendar; Tasks; Notes and Email folders.

The software is of only 2.11 MB and installation is breeze. You need to close Outlook before the installation. Once installed the menu item is visible in the menu bar from where it can be activated.

Using ODIR is very easy: select a folder and click the button Remove Duplicate Items.

ODIR at work

ODIR scans the selected folder for duplicates and MOVES all duplicates found to a subfolder ODIR_duplicate items.

ODIR at work 2
It not only deletes the duplicate emails but also duplicate contacts, tasks, appointments and posts as well. Sweet, isn't it. Give it a try and let me know your feedback. And please share anything similar like this. Please download it from here.

eBook creator for your Java Phone

In my earlier post I had discussed that how we can read eBooks in our simple java mobile phone. And I had given a link of the website BooksInMyPhone to download free eBooks. After few days I have realized that I do have extensive collection of eBooks and these books were not available at the BooksInMyPhone site.

TCBR (TequilaCat Book Reader) software helps to create eBooks for mobile phone. This software consists of two parts.

  • TCBR Shell - program for Windows PC that creates JAR books. Linux/Mac version is being developed. The Windows shell works under Wine.

  • JAR Books created by the Shell. Each JAR Book contains book text and viewer program for the book.

The software interface is simple with very easy to understand and within few minutes you can create eBooks for your mobile phone. The ebook is in JAR format and can be loaded to your mobile phone like any game or mobile app without any hassle.

Some of the unique features of this software are:

  1. Supports multiple fonts including Windows fonts, shows books in your language even if your phone has no national fonts. Allows for smooth fonts (if a book was created on Windows XP having ClearType on)
  2. Displays rotated text (clockwise, counter-clockwise) - hold your phone as it suits you best.
  3. Autoscroll -- by page, by line, smooth (by pixel) scroll NEW!
  4. Displays pictures in text (if a book was created from HTML file) NEW!
  5. Chapter recognition: Shell auto-detects chapters and Table of Contents is added to the book more

Well, I have spent couple of hours and built a good library in my mobile phone and planning to convert some text books as well :)
